Community Medicine

Overview

The Hospital adheres to a single standard for assessing and meeting community need, while retaining a geographically focused approach for soliciting community participation and involvement and providing community outreach. The Department has hosted innumerable training conferences of both National and International repute. Training course on “Public Health Emergency – Disaster Preparedness & Response” from 25th to 29th October 2010 & 19th Sep to 23rd Sep, 2011, 10th Sep to 14th Sep 2012, in co-ordination with Health Protection Agency, UK is one such example.

  • It is a comprehensive discipline of Medicine, which deals with the health needs of people, both sick & well, inclusive of the problems of individual patients.
  • It encompasses Planning, Administration and Management of Health services.
  • It also includes Primary health care, Maternal & child health, Control of Communicable diseases & Non-communicable diseases, Improvement of Environment, etc

    Field Based Activities of Department of Community Medicine include adoption of Primary Health Centre – Ittamadu Village, Ramnagar Dist., Urban Health Centre – Agara, , Urban Health Centre – Channasandra -, Community Care Centre – Ramanagar Town, Ramnagar Dist. which is a supporting centre for HIV/ AIDS under NACO, India.

    Grama – Panchayathi Population – Adoption Programme with allotment of unique identification number for every house – hold, for provision of cashless Health Services at RRMCH Hospital & Household surveys are conducted by the Para – Medical workers of the department.

    Non-Communicable Disease Survey at Urban Slums, School Health Surveys. Anganwadi Health – Check-up, etc.

    The Department has networked with Govt. bodies, NGO’s Rotary hospitals for out-reach activities Alliances with Karnataka Health Protection Agency (KHPT), Department of Health & Family Welfare, Department of Factories & Boilers, Govt. of Karnataka & India & Health Protection Agency (HPA) UK, Birmingham, etc, which has enriched the Department in Academics .

World Breastfeeding week (August 1st week)

  • To instill a sense of social activism among the undergraduate students with regard to important Public Health Issues, so that they mature to become Doctors who are more proactive when it comes to health issues of community. Towards this end, rallies and health education programmes are organized.
  • Educational programmes are organized at Ittamadu PHC area, Ramnagara District, (Rural Field Practice area of our Institute, the PHC being adopted by the Dept. of Community Medicine, RRMCH)

Health Camps

  • Health check-up camps are being organized at our Institutional field practice areas
  • In collaboration with Rotary Club, we run an Outreach Health Centre at Agara village,
  • We conduct Health check-ups at Schools & Anganwadi centers

World Environment day (5m June)

  • Theme: “Your planet needs you - Unite to combat climate change”.
  • In pursuance of the UN campaign, trees were planted by staff & students in our campus... "Be the change you want see".
  • Dr. Surendra V.H.H, Industrial Medical Officer, Govt. of Karnataka, spoke on issues related to occupation health, global warming. Climate change and its effect on health.
  • A collage competition was held with the theme "Unite to Combat Change", to focus the creative talents of students towards an important cause.

Educational Seminar at Nittur Technical and Training Foundation, Peenya, Bangalore,Knowledge sharing exercise:

General health issues including hygiene, common diseases and occupational health:
  • NTTF - Bangalore,
  • Seminars on RNTCP at DTO - Bangalore (U), and on NLEP at THO – Ramnagara district.
  • Dr. Surendra V.H.H, Industrial Medical Officer, Govt. of Karnataka, spoke on issues related to occupation health, global warming. Climate change and its will effects on health.

Community Health Programme for HIV Positives

Our extended curricular program includes involvement in the following HIV/AIDS prevention/control activities;
  • Managing a Community Care Centre (CCC) for the PLHAs in Ramanagaram district, through a NACO-GFATM-KHPT-SPRVHA grant
  • SManagement of the Department at teaching staff as Consultants with the 'Tami Nadu state JU^OS control society, for mentoring support of CCC and Drop-in-centers in the state of TN,
  • Establishing ICTC Centre at RajaRajeswari Hospital, Bangalore

Other Activities:

  • Chikungunya epidemic investigation at Ittamadu PHC area, Ramanagara District
  • Conducting seminars for capacity building of Medical officers of PHC (Health care waste management and Tuberculosis)
  • Secured unique Institutional Ethical Review Board (IRB) & Federal Wide Assurance (FWA) numbers from National Institute of Health, USA, for ethical conduct of research projects and administrative systems in grant management
