Forensic Medicine

The Forensic Medicine Department is dedicated to the study and subsequent application of several areas of the medical sciences which are applied to Human Body in order to assist the law for investigating a crime so that a full plausible reconstruction of the events in a crime like murder, sexual assault, poisoning or natural deaths could be made certain beyond reasonable doubt. It also deals with the concept of imparting knowledge of Medico-Legal responsibilities to the treating physician and various problems pertaining to the practice of legal medicine.

The curriculum includes syllabus on Medical Jurisprudence, Forensic Pathology, Viscera Packing Application of Anthropology, Toxicology, etc. The department is vested with a good laboratory having adequate Microscopes and Specimens. Clinical Forensic Median services, Medico legal Postmortems in the Mortuary, Toxicology lab works, Court related works also come under the department.

All autopsies and examination of human tissues is done by the Forensic Medicine Department with the help from other departments in the Medical Institute itself. The Examination of Physical Evidence, Toxicological Analyses, DNA testing including tests for blood stains, narco-analysis, brain mapping etc are done at the Forensic Laboratories run usually by the State or Central Government or other special centers set up for this purpose.

The application of Forensic Medicine plays a crucial role in police and crime investigations making the work done by the medico on duty crucial to investigation of the crime.

RajaRajeswari Medical College & Hospital, through this Department,
  • to meet the National Objective of skills in all related matters, being sensitive to ethical/ moral duties & ability to draw conclusions from autopsy work, Treating Poisoning Cases & Managing Clinical Forensic Medicine tasks. The curriculum followed is according to the requirements of the Medical Council of India Requirements & in accordance with the course prescribed by Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences

Microbiology

Clinical Microbiology, a major branch of medical science is concerned with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases. It has evolved leaps and bounds from conventional techniques to genomics. We at RRMCH are at the cusp of cutting-edge translational research with facilities like Nanopore Next Generation Sequencing in the department. Central Microbiology laboratory on the other hand, handles routine diagnostic patient samples Bacteriology, Virology, Immunology, Mycology, Serology and Parasitology. A Molecular Microbiology laboratory facility with RT-PCR is also available. We are NABL accredited for COVID-19 by RT-PCR. In addition, the Microbiology Research laboratory has special microscopes like phase contrast & fluorescent, dark ground microscopes. The Clinical laboratory is enrolled in External quality assurance schemes (EQAS) with PGI Chandigarh & CMC, Vellore in addition to ILC.

All faculty have been trained in hospital infection control, NABH, NABL, RBMET, AETCOM, CISP and BCBR. They are fully qualified to train the MBBS students in Competency Based Medical Education (CBME). We also train students pursuing undergraduate courses for Dentistry, Physiotherapy, MLT, Nursing & allied health.

The department has a well-established practical laboratory with excellent quality microscopes. A well set up museum with various charts, models, slides and specimens is available. The Department has had Post Graduate course of M.D. (Microbiology)since 2012. The department faculty are updated with the latest in the field by way of conducting and participating in CME’s, workshops and research activities and delivering guest lectures both at International and national level. They also have many publications in national and international journals. Mentorship is actively done by the faculty mentors.

dpt-pathology

Pathology

Pathology as a subject deals with study of human diseases. It forms the bridge between Pre Clinical & Clinical Sciences. It is to do with the application of advances in basic biological sciences, understand the nature and evaluation of each disease in detail.

The Department of Pathology helps students advance their knowledge of pathological conditions. The Department utilizes advanced systems for routine and specialized diagnosis and students are encouraged to refer to the vast collection of CDs and slides. Computers and Binocular Microscopes with CCTV further aid students in the learning process.

The Department of Pathology imparts theoretical and practical training to the II MBBS students. The subject of Pathology deals with the understanding of disease processes, disease evolution and consequences of the same. It deals with Laboratory diagnosis, correlating clinical features with laboratory findings, and interpretation of laboratory investigation results. It teaches the students in the performing basic investigation procedures and tests.

The students who have completed the basic sciences namely Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry get to learn in Pathology, altered structure, altered – function and changes in the biochemical parameters. This helps in understanding of diseases. Pathology is the backbone of clinical medicine.

The curriculum centers around Histopathology, Hematology, cytology along with clinical Pathology. The diagnostic wing in the hospital offers services under these categories.

The department is well equipped with necessary infrastructure especially adequate specimens for museum, slides for study, audio-visual aids and department library. All these are put to maximum use for creating an exemplary learning environment, as we patronize the concept of “Pathology in pictures”.

The entire armamentarium includes state-of-the-art imported microscopes, microtomes, automatic cell counters and computerized diagnostic facility.

Cardiology

Rajarajeswari Heart Center, part of the esteem institute, Rajarajeswari Medical College& Hospital. Was established in May 2012 as an initial non-interventional department with 2D echocardiography, Treadmill Test and cardiac consultation. After the initial good response, our interventional department was established in December 2012. Since then, there was no looking back, the department has made leaps & bounds in patient care, catering in all fields of cardiology like pediatric device closure for ASD & VSD (congenital heart diseases), to adult coronary artery disease, peripheral artery diseases, heart failure, heart blocks and arrhythmia management with ablations. The department has ever since been catering to the community with the latest technology and best cardiac care at the most affordableprices.

Anatomy

The branch of biology that deals with the study of structures of human beings is referred to as Anatomy. Dissection of cadavers forms the corner stone in learning Anatomy. The curriculum ranges from Grass Anatomy, Osteology (Study of Bones), Histology (study of tissues) to embryology and applied Anatomy. The department of Anatomy is situated in the preclinical block of medical college campus.
The department of Anatomy at Rajarajeswari Medical College and Hospital stands out in its uniqueness. The section is marked with a huge dissection hall that has good ventilation &. attached to the dissection hall is the embalming room with storage tanks for preservation of the cadavers. The cleanliness is always maintained and is under observation by our trained attenders. The students are given a combination of lectures, visual presentations and dissections to ensure that they understand every aspect of the body from head to toe thoroughly.

The department also comprises of:

1. The Histology Practical Lab which is spacious and well equipped with USB 2 digital camera. Students are individually provided with microscopes for the study of slides. Adjacent to it is the research lab where all necessary equipments are available for research purpose.
2. Further there are lecture halls, departmental library, & well furnished staff rooms. And the dissection hall comprising of bone and meat cutting machines, embalming room, storage tanks and cooling cabinets for dead bodies and dissection tables.
3. The museum is one of the highlights to the department where specimens both dry and wet are neatly arranged.
4. The Department Library consists of adequate books for the study references of the students. Add to this, two demonstration rooms are provided for Osteology classes in smaller batches of students and also to conduct tutorials and seminars.
