Worlds AIDS Vaccine Day or HIV Vaccine Awareness Day is observed every year on 18 May. This day marks the efforts of thousands of researchers, scientists, and health professionals who have contributed to the process of finding safe and effective AIDS medicine. It is also an opportunity to educate communities about the importance of preventive HIV vaccine research.
This day is celebrated by World Hypertension League (WHL) on 17 May annually. The day promotes awareness about hypertension and encourages people to prevent and control this silent killer epidemic.
The day is observed (16 May) with the recommendation of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. Dengue is prevalent across the country. This year due to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, awareness campaigns, rallies, etc. regarding Dengue is not organised in the country but can be spread through online.
Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) made headlines this winter for its role in the tripledemic that, together with COVID-19 and flu, slammed many U.S. hospitals. But now there’s some good news related to RSV: On May 3, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave its first-ever approval to a vaccine that protects against the dangerous condition. Each year, RSV is associated with 6,000 to 10,000 deaths of U.S. adults 65 and older, and as many as 160,000 hospitalizations for
that vulnerable group. It also kills hundreds of children under the age of 5.

The Department of Pediatrics proudly celebrated
Autism Week on April 29, 2025, with a focus on promoting inclusivity and awareness through the lens of neurodiversity and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The event was inaugurated with a symbolic plant-watering ceremony by our respected unit chiefs —
Dr. Sreekrishna, Dr. Rajanish, and Dr. Karthik — reflecting growth, nurturing, and sustainability.
Highlights of the event included:
Cultural performances: A creative mime by interns and an energetic dance by postgraduate students brought vibrancy and emotion to the occasion.
Expert talks: Insightful sessions were delivered by
Dr. Sowmyashree (Pediatric Psychiatrist), Dr. Kishore (Pediatric Neurologist), and members of the neurodevelopmental team, sharing knowledge and perspectives on autism care.
The program concluded with a thank-you note from Dr. Sushmita (JR1), expressing appreciation to all participants and supporters.
With over 60 attendees, the event was a resounding success, reinforcing our commitment to enhancing neurodevelopmental care and fostering an inclusive healthcare environment.

In celebration of World Voice Day, the Department of ENT & Head and Neck Surgery at RajaRajeswari Medical College & Hospital (RRMCH) organized a special guest lecture session featuring two renowned experts in the field of laryngology.
Dr. Sanjay Subbaiah delivered an insightful talk titled “Neurolaryngology: Past, Present, and Future”, where he traced the evolution of neurogenic voice and swallowing disorder management. His presentation offered a comprehensive overview—from historical developments to current clinical practices and emerging innovations—providing attendees with a deeper understanding of this specialized domain.
Following this, Dr. Manjunath M.K. presented a detailed lecture on “Thyroplasty and Injection Laryngoplasty”, focusing on surgical techniques for voice restoration. He shared his expertise on patient selection, procedural nuances, and outcome expectations, offering practical guidance drawn from his extensive surgical experience.
The session was well-attended by faculty members, postgraduate students, and practicing clinicians. It was highly appreciated for its academic depth and clinical relevance, significantly enhancing participants’ knowledge of voice disorders and their management.

On this day the International Council of Nurses organisation produces an International Nurses kit to educate and assist health workers globally with a different theme every year.
Every year National Technology Day is observed on 11 May to highlight the important role of Science in our daily lives and encourage students to opt for science as an option for a career. On this day Shakti, the Pokhran nuclear test was held on 11 May 1998.
