Theme based CME on Colonic Disorders

The Department of General Surgery, Rajarajeshwari Medical College and Hospital (RRMCH), Bengaluru, successfully organized a Theme Based CME – Colonic Disorders on 19 August 2026 at the Kadamba Auditorium, RRMCH. The full-day scientific programme brought together eminent clinicians, surgeons, gastroenterologists, pathologists, oncologists and allied healthcare professionals for an enriching exchange of contemporary knowledge and clinical experience.
The CME featured a comprehensive scientific programme addressing important and evolving aspects of colonic disorders. The morning sessions focused on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), covering its pathophysiology, Rome IV criteria, the gut-brain axis, targeted pharmacotherapy, dietary interventions and microbiome therapeutics. Sessions on Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) addressed diagnostic stratification, advanced medical management with biologics and small molecules, as well as the management of strictures, fistulas and appropriate surgical timing.
The scientific session opened with a focus on Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Dr. Avinash B from M S Ramaiah Medical College initiated the discussion by walking attendees through the pathophysiology, Rome IV criteria, and targeted pharmacotherapy for IBS. Following this, Mrs. Shalini Arvind from Fortis Hospital addressed the role of dietary interventions and microbiome therapeutics in managing the condition.
The program then shifted focus to Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). Dr. Santosh K V examined the histopathological stratification differentiating Crohn’s disease from ulcerative colitis. Next, Dr. Adarsh C K discussed advanced medical management options, highlighting recent developments in biologics and small molecules. Concluding the section on IBD, Dr. Sathish O presented on surgical considerations, covering the management of strictures and fistulas alongside the critical timing of surgical intervention.
Moving on to diverticular diseases, Dr. Ravindra B S from Fortis Hospitals outlined the outpatient management of diverticulosis and the inpatient handling of acute diverticulitis, emphasizing proper antibiotic stewardship. Dr. Sathish O then took the stage again to detail the specific clinical indications for both elective and emergency bowel resections.
The final segment of the session focused on colorectal cancer and polyps. Dr. Siddeshi E R presented strategies for screening and early detection, after which Dr. Prashanth B Gandhi addressed polyp morphology and techniques for advanced endoscopic resection.
Finally, Dr. Rajeev N delivered a presentation on the surgical management of malignant colorectal lesions, concluding the proceedings.
The programme concluded successfully with an engaging academic discussion, bringing together perspectives from multiple specialties. The breadth of topics, expertise of the faculty and clinically oriented discussions made the CME a valuable learning experience for all participants.
